How does treatment with laser work?

Laser and IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatments use focused light to treat everything from unwanted hair and pigment spots to visible blood vessels and skin rejuvenation. Different wavelengths target different structures in the skin: melanin for hair and pigment, haemoglobin for vessels. In Sweden, medical laser treatment may only be performed by licensed staff, and a mandatory skin analysis must be carried out before the first treatment to assess skin type according to the Fitzpatrick scale.

How the treatment is carried out — step by step

  1. 1

    Consultation and skin analysis

The practitioner assesses your skin type (Fitzpatrick I–VI), goes through your medical history and asks about medications, sun habits and previous treatments. Many laser types require sun-free skin for 2–4 weeks before treatment.

  2. 2

    Skin preparation

The area is shaved (for hair removal) and cleansed, and a cold gel is applied to conduct the light better and cool the skin. You are given protective goggles against the laser light.

  3. 3

    The treatment

The laser handpiece is moved over the skin and emits short pulses of light. It feels like small heat pricks or snaps against the skin. The time depends on the size of the area — the upper lip takes 5 min, legs can take up to an hour.

  4. 4

    Immediately after the treatment

The skin is often slightly red and warm for the first few hours. Soothing gel or compresses can be used. You can leave straight away and most people return to their everyday routine the same day.

  5. 5

    Course of treatments

Hair removal usually requires 6–8 treatments, 4–8 weeks apart, for permanent reduction, because the laser only affects hair in the growth phase. Pigment and vessels can often be treated in 1–3 sessions.

Recovery and aftercare

Laser and IPL treatments generally have a short recovery. The skin is sensitive to light afterwards and sun protection is crucial to avoid hyperpigmentation — otherwise the result may be the opposite of what was intended.

  • Use sunscreen with SPF 50+ daily for at least 4 weeks after the treatment.
  • Avoid direct sunlight, sunbeds and self-tanner for 4 weeks — risk of pigment changes.
  • Avoid saunas, hot baths and intense exercise for the first 24–48 hours.
  • Do not use active skincare products (retinol, AHA, BHA, high-concentration vitamin C) during the first week.
  • Cool the skin as needed with cold compresses or aloe vera gel.
  • If you get blisters, burns or prolonged redness — contact the clinic.

Who is not suited to laser?

The treatment is not suitable in the following situations. Always mention these during the consultation.

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding (precautionary principle — safety has not been fully evaluated).
  • Active sunburn or self-tan on the treatment area.
  • Skin conditions in an active flare: psoriasis, eczema, vitiligo or inflamed acne.
  • Light sensitivity caused by medications (antibiotics such as tetracycline, certain antipsychotics, hypericum/St John's wort).
  • Active herpes infection on the treatment area — may trigger an outbreak.
  • Tattoos or permanent make-up on the treatment area (the laser can damage the ink).
  • Pacemaker or other implanted medical device in the area (for certain laser types).
  • Very dark skin (Fitzpatrick V–VI) requires a specialised laser and increases the risk of pigment changes.

Differences between brands

Several different products are used in Sweden. The differences are often small — which brand suits you is decided by your practitioner based on your goals and previous treatments.

Alexandrite laser (755 nm)

The most widely used for hair removal on light to medium-dark skin. Fast treatment with a large spot size. Less suitable for dark skin types.

Diode laser (810 nm)

Effective for hair removal on all skin types, including darker skin. Many modern clinics have so-called "pain-free" diode lasers with integrated cooling.

Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm)

A longer wavelength that reaches deeper and is safe even for dark skin types (Fitzpatrick V–VI). Also used for vessels and pigment.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)

Technically not a laser — but a broad spectrum of light. Versatile: hair, vessels, pigment and redness. Less powerful but often cheaper.

Fractional laser (CO2 / Erbium)

For skin rejuvenation and scars — creates microscopic treatment zones that stimulate new collagen formation. Longer healing time (3–7 days).

When will you see the results?

  1. Immediately afterSlight redness and warmth in the skin. After hair removal the hairs may look as if they are "sticking out" — they are pushed out over the following weeks.
  2. Week 1–2Hair in the growth phase falls out naturally. Pigment spots darken temporarily before they flake off.
  3. Week 4–8Time for the next treatment in a hair removal series — as long as new hairs are in the growth phase.
  4. After 6–8 treatmentsPermanent hair reduction of 80–95% in the treated area. Maintenance treatment 1–2 times a year for the occasional remaining hair.
  5. For skin rejuvenationVisible result after 4–6 weeks once new collagen has built up. Full effect after 3–6 months.

Risks and what to consider

Common side effects

Mild swelling, redness or bruising at the treatment site. Usually disappears within a few days.

How to reduce the risk

Choose a clinic with licensed staff, documented experience and valid liability insurance. Book a consultation first.

Warning signs

Unbelievably low prices, no consultation, unclear information about the practitioner. If so, you should keep looking.
