How does treatment with skincare work?

Advanced skincare is an umbrella term for medical and paramedical treatments that go deeper than ordinary home care — chemical peels, microneedling, skin boosters (Profhilo), PRP, HydraFacial, mesotherapy and fractional treatments. The aim is to improve the skin's texture, radiance, tone and elasticity rather than to correct muscles or volume. At medical clinics, deeper treatments are performed by a registered nurse or a trained medical skin therapist, often in series of 3–6 treatments for the best results.

How the treatment is carried out — step by step

    Skin analysis and treatment plan

    The practitioner analyses your skin — often with a special camera (Visia, Observ) to see deeper layers, pigment and vessels. Based on your goals (acne, scars, fine lines, radiance), one or more types of treatment are proposed as a series.

    Preparation

    The skin is cleansed and degreased. Numbing cream is used for deeper treatments. Depending on the method (peel, microneedling, laser), different solutions or products are applied.

    The treatment

    The treatment itself takes 30–90 minutes depending on type and area. You may feel stinging, warmth or a mild burning sensation. You are awake throughout and can say if you feel discomfort — the practitioner adjusts the intensity.

    Soothing and protection

    A soothing mask, LED light or a cold compress. Sunscreen is applied before you leave — UV protection is critical after most skin treatments to avoid pigment changes.

    Treatment series and maintenance

    Most advanced skin treatments require a series of 3–6 sessions, 2–6 weeks apart, for the best results. Maintenance 2–4 times a year is recommended to sustain the effect.

Recovery and aftercare

Recovery time varies greatly between treatment types — from none at all (HydraFacial) to a week of flaking (medium-depth peel). In general, the skin is more sensitive to UV and active ingredients for 1–2 weeks after treatment.

  • Use SPF 50+ daily for at least 2 weeks — this applies to all skin treatments.
  • Avoid active ingredients (retinol, AHA, BHA, high-concentration vitamin C) until the skin has recovered (5–14 days depending on the treatment).
  • Wash your face with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser without acids.
  • Use the skincare the clinic has specifically recommended — the wrong products can counteract the result.
  • Avoid saunas, hot baths, intense exercise and sunbeds for the first 48–72 hours.
  • Do not pick, scratch or pull at flaking skin — it can cause scarring or pigment changes.
  • Wait at least 2 weeks between different skin treatments and other aesthetic treatments in the same area.
  • In case of unusual swelling, blisters, prolonged redness or a smarting sensation — contact the clinic.

Who is not suited to skincare?

The treatment is not suitable in the following situations. Always mention these during the consultation.

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding (applies particularly to chemical peels and certain active ingredients).
  • Active skin infection (bacterial, viral, fungal) on the treatment area.
  • Active acne breakout or cystic acne — some treatments can worsen the inflammation.
  • Eczema, psoriasis or rosacea in an active flare.
  • Ongoing isotretinoin treatment (Roaccutan) or treatment stopped within the last 6 months.
  • Sunburnt skin or skin covered with self-tan.
  • Previous allergic reactions to specific ingredients (specified by the practitioner depending on the method).
  • Tendency to keloid or hypertrophic scarring — risk of worsened scarring with deeper treatments.
  • Weakened immune system or ongoing chemotherapy.

Differences between brands

Several different products are used in Sweden. The differences are often small — which brand suits you is decided by your practitioner based on your goals and previous treatments.

Microneedling / Dermapen

Fine needles that stimulate collagen production. Good for acne scars, fine lines, pore size and stretch marks. 3–6 treatments in a series. Recovery: 1–3 days.

Profhilo & Skinboosters

Bio-remodelling hyaluronic acid that improves skin quality, hydration and elasticity without adding volume. 2 treatments, 4 weeks apart. Minimal recovery.

Chemical peel (PRX-T33, TCA, AHA/BHA)

Acids that exfoliate and stimulate skin renewal. Different strengths: superficial (no recovery) to medium-depth (5–7 days of flaking). Good for pigment, acne and texture.

PRP & PRF (Vampire Facial)

Plasma from your own blood is injected or worked into the skin with microneedling. Gradually stimulates skin rejuvenation. 3 treatments, 4–6 weeks apart.

HydraFacial

Deep cleansing, exfoliation and hydration in the same machine. An instant glow with no recovery. Good as an "event treatment" or monthly maintenance.

Fractional laser (CO2, Erbium)
