How does treatment with profhilo work?
Profhilo is a bio-remodelling hyaluronic acid treatment that improves the skin's quality, hydration and elasticity — it does not work like a traditional filler and does not add volume or shape. Profhilo consists of extremely pure, cross-linked hyaluronic acid (both high- and low-molecular-weight) that is released slowly and stimulates the production of collagen and elastin by the skin's own fibroblasts. The result is visibly firmer, more hydrated and "radiant" skin — the treatment is popular for the face, neck, décolletage and hands. In Sweden, Profhilo is performed by a licensed physician or registered nurse after a consultation. Before an aesthetic injection treatment, a cooling-off period of at least two days applies after you have received the information about the treatment. If the same type of injection treatment is repeated within six months, no new cooling-off period is required.

How the treatment is carried out — step by step
- 1
Consultation and skin analysis
The practitioner assesses the skin's quality, elasticity and hydration — often with photos so that before/after can be compared. Profhilo is not a filler, so expectations are adjusted: you will not get more volume, but the skin will look firmer and more vibrant. Before an aesthetic injection treatment, a cooling-off period of at least two days applies after you have received the information about the treatment. If the same type of injection treatment is repeated within six months, no new cooling-off period is required.
- 2
Skin preparation
The skin is thoroughly cleansed and disinfected. Numbing cream may be applied 15–20 minutes beforehand, but many people find Profhilo comfortable — a very fine needle is used.
- 3
Injection at the BAP points
For the face, Profhilo is injected at 5 specific "Bio Aesthetic Points" (BAP) per side — strategic points that give an even spread across the whole face via the tissue's own network. A similar technique is used for the neck, décolletage and hands. The whole face takes about 15 minutes.
- 4
Immediately after the treatment
Small bumps (5 per side on the face) are visible immediately after the injection — this is normal. The bumps consist of the Profhilo gel, which slowly spreads and is absorbed over 24–48 hours.
- 5
Second treatment after 4 weeks
The Profhilo protocol is 2 treatments 4 weeks apart. The full result is seen after the second. Maintenance every 6 months is recommended — often as a single dose after the first complete series.
Recovery and aftercare
Profhilo involves minimal recovery, but the small bumps are visible for 24–48 hours — important to plan for. We do not recommend the treatment 1–2 days before an event where you want to look rested. Otherwise, you can return to your everyday life straight away.
- Do NOT massage the bumps after the treatment — they should be absorbed naturally over 24–48 hours.
- Avoid pressing, rubbing or touching the treatment area for 24 hours.
- Sleep with your head slightly raised the first night to reduce any swelling.
- Avoid intense exercise, saunas, sunbeds and hot baths for the first 48 hours.
- Do not use face masks, peels or harsh skincare for 1 week.
- Use SPF 30+ daily — sun protection enhances the treatment result.
- Drink plenty of water — hyaluronic acid binds water and gives a better effect.
- Avoid blood-thinning medicines (NSAIDs, fish oil, vitamin E) for 24 hours if medically possible.
- In case of unusual pain, persistent redness or discolouration — contact the clinic.
Who is not suited to profhilo?
The treatment is not suitable in the following situations. Always mention these during the consultation.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
- Known hypersensitivity to hyaluronic acid.
- Active infection or skin condition in the treatment area (acne, herpes, eczema in a flare-up).
- Autoimmune diseases in an active phase, or ongoing immunosuppressive treatment.
- Ongoing blood-thinning treatment — discuss with a physician first.
- Previous permanent fillers (silicone, polyacrylamide) in the same area.
- Ongoing antibiotic treatment — wait until it has been completed.
- Active sunburn in the treatment area.
- Unrealistic expectations — Profhilo improves skin quality, not volume or shape.
Differences between brands
Several different products are used in Sweden. The differences are often small — which brand suits you is decided by your practitioner based on your goals and previous treatments.
Profhilo® (IBSA)
The original and the most proven brand. Contains the highest concentration of hyaluronic acid (32 mg/ml, high- and low-molecular-weight) on the market. Standard protocol: 2 ml per session, 5 BAP points per side of the face.
Restylane® Vital / Skinboosters (Galderma)
Micro-injections of thin, non-modified hyaluronic acid across the whole treatment area. Gives a similar effect on skin hydration and elasticity to Profhilo, but usually requires 3 treatments in the series.
Sunekos®
An Italian skin booster that combines low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid with a blend of 6 essential amino acids. Stimulates both collagen and elastin directly. Often 4 treatments 1 week apart.
NCTF® (FillMed)
A mesotherapy cocktail with 53 ingredients (hyaluronic acid, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, coenzymes). Gives a quick but shorter-lasting effect — often 4 treatments every other week, then monthly maintenance.
Juvéderm® Volite (Allergan)
A slightly thicker hyaluronic acid gel that gives a longer effect (up to 9 months) from a single treatment. A compromise between filler and skin booster — popular with people who want few visits.
When will you see the results?
- Immediately afterSmall bumps visible at the injection sites — 5 per side on the face. Mild redness is normal.
- Day 1–2The bumps begin to be absorbed and become less noticeable. Possible mild swelling.
- Day 3–7The bumps are gone. The skin may feel somewhat firmer and more hydrated.
- Week 4Time for the second treatment in the protocol — the full effect is only reached after this one.
- Months 2–3Visible result: the skin is firmer, more hydrated and has a natural radiance. Fine lines soften.
- Month 6The effect gradually wears off. Time for a maintenance treatment — usually a single dose.
Risks and what to consider
Profhilo is a very safe treatment when performed by an experienced practitioner. The immediate side effects are minimal — small bumps/lumps at the injection site that are absorbed naturally within 24–48 hours (entirely normal, not a complication). Low risk of mild redness, swelling or bruising that passes within a few hours. Very rarely (under 1%), temporary asymmetry can occur if the injections were not spread evenly — this is corrected at the next treatment. Extremely rarely, an allergy or sensitivity reaction to hyaluronic acid can occur — this shows as prolonged redness, itching or a rash and requires immediate contact with the clinic. Infections are very uncommon if the clinic follows good sterile technique. Injections in the face near blood vessels or nerves require correct anatomical knowledge — an experienced practitioner minimises this risk completely. Long-term side effects are not documented — hyaluronic acid is fully broken down and disappears. The result may vary depending on your skin type and starting point.
