How does treatment with mesotherapy work?

Mesotherapy is an injection treatment in which a cocktail of vitamins, amino acids, minerals, hyaluronic acid and plant-based extracts is injected into the middle layer of the skin (mesoderm) with extremely fine needles. The technique was developed in France in the 1950s and is used today for skin rejuvenation, hair growth (mesotherapy capillaire), cellulite treatment and general skin quality. Different "mesococktails" are tailored to what is to be treated. In Sweden, mesotherapy is performed by a licensed physician or registered nurse — when local treatment is combined with injections, a consultation is required. Before an aesthetic injection treatment, a cooling-off period of at least two days applies after you have received the information about the treatment. If the same type of injection treatment is repeated within six months, no new cooling-off period is required.

How the treatment is carried out — step by step

  1. 1

    Consultation and choice of cocktail

The practitioner analyses your skin (or scalp) and your goals — anti-ageing, radiance, acne, thinning hair or cellulite. Based on this, a specific cocktail is chosen. Before an aesthetic injection treatment, a cooling-off period of at least two days applies after you have received the information about the treatment. If the same type of injection treatment is repeated within six months, no new cooling-off period is required.

  2. 2

    Preparation

The area is cleansed and disinfected. Numbing cream is applied 15–20 minutes beforehand, especially for more sensitive areas such as the scalp or lip contours.

  3. 3

    Micro-injections

The chosen cocktail is injected at many small points (50–100 or more) across the treatment area with a very fine needle or a mesogun. The depth is superficial — 1–4 mm — and the amount injected per point is small (0.1–0.2 ml).

  4. 4

    Soothing aftercare

Mild redness and possibly small bumps are normal immediately afterwards. A soothing mask or cold compress may be used. SPF is applied before you leave.

  5. 5

    Treatment series and maintenance

Initial series: 4 treatments every other week, then monthly maintenance. For scalp treatment: often 6–10 sessions 2 weeks apart, then monthly maintenance. The effect is cumulative — visible results after 3–4 sessions.

Recovery and aftercare

Mesotherapy involves minimal recovery. Mild redness and small needle marks are visible for 24–48 hours. Any small bumps (papules) under the skin are usually absorbed within a few hours to a day. You can usually return to your everyday life straight away.

  • Do not wash the area for 4–6 hours after the treatment — let the cocktail absorb.
  • No make-up for 12 hours after a facial treatment.
  • Use SPF 30+ daily for at least 1 week — the skin is somewhat more sensitive to light.
  • Avoid saunas, intense exercise, hot baths and sunbeds for the first 24–48 hours.
  • Avoid active ingredients (retinol, acids) for 3–5 days.
  • For scalp treatment: do not wash your hair for the first 12–24 hours and avoid styling products containing alcohol.
  • Drink plenty of water — it supports cell renewal.
  • In case of unusual swelling, itching or rash — contact the clinic (an allergic reaction to any ingredient in the cocktail is rare but possible).

Who is not suited to mesotherapy?

The treatment is not suitable in the following situations. Always mention these during the consultation.

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Known hypersensitivity to any ingredient in the chosen cocktail.
  • Active infection in the treatment area (bacterial, viral, fungal).
  • Skin conditions in an active phase: inflamed acne, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea.
  • Ongoing blood-thinning treatment.
  • Bleeding disorders or coagulation disorders.
  • Active cancer or ongoing chemotherapy.
  • Autoimmune diseases in an active phase.
  • Diabetes with poorly controlled blood sugar — impaired wound healing.
  • Ongoing antibiotic treatment — wait until it has been completed.
  • Weakened immune system.

Differences between brands

Several different products are used in Sweden. The differences are often small — which brand suits you is decided by your practitioner based on your goals and previous treatments.

NCTF® 135 / 135 HA (FillMed)

The most classic mesotherapy cocktail — 53 ingredients including hyaluronic acid, vitamins (B, C, E), minerals, amino acids and coenzymes. Widely used for anti-ageing and skin rejuvenation.

Dermaheal® (Caregen)

A Korean range of peptide-based cocktails specially designed for different goals: HSR (anti-ageing), SR (sensitive skin), SB (sebum control), HL (hair growth). Market leader in Asia.

Sunekos®

A patented Italian blend of low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid and 6 essential amino acids. Stimulates both collagen and elastin directly — often 4 treatments 1 week apart.

Vitamin cocktails (custom-made)

Some clinics mix their own cocktails based on the practitioner's training and the client's needs — often with a focus on vitamin C, biotin and collagen peptides.

Mesotherapy capillaire (scalp)

A specific formula for hair loss — often contains minoxidil, biotin, caffeine, finasteride or a natural DHT inhibitor. Used both alone and in combination with PRP.

When will you see the results?

  2. Day 1–3Redness disappears. The skin gradually feels fresher. Any needle marks fade.
  3. Week 2Time for the next session in the series. Visible changes in radiance and skin texture begin to show.
  4. After 4 treatmentsNoticeable improvement in skin quality, hydration and elasticity. With hair treatment: reduced hair loss, thicker hair.
