How does treatment with microneedling work?
Microneedling — also known as dermapen, dermaroller or Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT) — is a treatment in which fine needles (0.25–2.5 mm) create microscopic, controlled skin injuries. This stimulates the body's own collagen and elastin production and improves skin texture, fine lines, scars (particularly acne scars), pore size and stretch marks. Medical clinics use electric pens (Dermapen 4, SkinPen) that give more even results than manual rollers. The treatment is performed by a registered nurse or a certified skin therapist.

How the treatment is carried out — step by step
- 1
Consultation and skin analysis
The practitioner assesses your skin type and existing concerns (scars, pigmentation, fine lines) and draws up a plan. You are told how many treatments are needed (usually 3–6, 4–6 weeks apart) and which serums can be combined.
- 2
Cleansing and numbing
The skin is cleansed thoroughly. Numbing cream is applied and left to work for 20–30 minutes — important for comfort at deeper needle settings (≥1.0 mm).
- 3
The treatment
The pen is moved systematically over the face in several directions. The needle depth is adjusted per zone: shallower on the forehead and under the eyes (0.25–0.5 mm), deeper on the cheeks and jaw (1.0–2.0 mm). A hyaluronic acid serum or PRP is often applied at the same time for better absorption.
- 4
Soothing aftercare
A soothing mask, cold LED light or compresses. The skin is blotchy and red, like mild sunburn. You go home with an aftercare plan including medical skincare.
- 5
Treatment series and maintenance
Visible results require 3–6 treatments, 4–6 weeks apart. Maintenance treatment 1–2 times a year is recommended. The result improves gradually, even between treatments, as new collagen builds up.
Recovery and aftercare
Microneedling has a relatively short recovery, but the skin is sensitive and fragile for a few days. For the first 24 hours it feels like mild sunburn. Plan the treatment 5–7 days before important social occasions.
- Do not wear make-up for 24 hours after the treatment.
- Use only the soothing skincare the clinic has recommended (usually hyaluronic acid serum + a mild moisturiser).
- Wash your face with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser without acids for 48 hours.
- Use SPF 50+ daily for at least 2 weeks — the skin is extra sensitive to UV.
- Avoid active ingredients (retinol, AHA, BHA, high-concentration vitamin C) for 5–7 days.
- Avoid intense exercise, saunas, swimming pools and hot baths for the first 48 hours.
- Light flaking may begin after 2–3 days — do not scratch or pick at it.
- No chemical peel, waxing or laser on the same area within 2 weeks.
Who is not suited to microneedling?
The treatment is not suitable in the following situations. Always mention these during the consultation.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding (precautionary principle).
- Active acne breakout — may spread bacteria and worsen the inflammation.
- Active herpes infection (cold sores) — may trigger an outbreak. Prophylactic antivirals may be needed.
- Eczema, psoriasis or rosacea in an active flare on the treatment area.
- Ongoing isotretinoin treatment (Roaccutan) or treatment stopped within the last 6 months.
- Bleeding disorders or ongoing blood-thinning treatment.
- Tendency to keloid or hypertrophic scarring — risk of worsened scarring.
- Sunburnt skin or skin covered in self-tan — wait until it has evened out.
- Active skin infection or open wounds on the treatment area.
- Weakened immune system or ongoing chemotherapy.
Differences between brands
Several different products are used in Sweden. The differences are often small — which brand suits you is decided by your practitioner based on your goals and previous treatments.
Dermapen 4 (Equipmed)
The world's most widely used professional microneedling pen. 16 needles, adjustable depth 0.25–3 mm, high speed (110 cycles/sec). Single-use cartridges prevent contamination.
SkinPen® Precision
The first FDA-approved microneedling pen. Clinical evidence for acne scars. 14 needles, depth 0.25–2.5 mm.
Genuine Dermaroller™
Manual roller — cost-effective but less precise than the pens. Recommended mainly for home care with shorter needles (0.2–0.5 mm), not for deep treatment.
RF Microneedling (Morpheus8, Genius RF)
Combines needles with radiofrequency heat — a deeper effect on skin tightening and deep scars. More expensive and a longer recovery, but stronger results.
When will you see the results?
- Immediately afterThe skin is red and warm, like mild sunburn. Slight swelling is common.
- Day 1–3The redness subsides. The skin feels rough and dry. Light flaking may begin.
- Day 4–7The skin looks fresh, often with a "glow" effect from increased blood flow and new skin cells.
- Week 4–6Visible improvement in texture and pores. Time for the next treatment in the series.
- After 3–6 treatmentsNoticeable change in skin quality, fine lines and scars. New collagen continues to build up for 6–12 months after the last treatment.
Risks and what to consider
Mild swelling, redness or bruising at the treatment site. Usually disappears within a few days.
Choose a clinic with licensed staff, documented experience and valid liability insurance. Book a consultation first.
Unbelievably low prices, no consultation, unclear information about the practitioner. If so, you should keep looking.
