How does treatment with PRP work?

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) and PRF (Platelet-Rich Fibrin) are treatments in which a small amount of your own blood is drawn and centrifuged, and the concentrated plasma with growth factors is returned to the skin or scalp. The plasma contains platelets that release natural growth factors which stimulate collagen formation, skin rejuvenation and, in scalp treatment, hair growth. PRP/PRF is popular for the "Vampire Facial", treatment of acne scars, dark circles under the eyes and hair loss (alopecia). Because the plasma comes from your own body, the risk of allergies is very low. In Sweden, PRP is performed by a licensed physician or registered nurse.

How the treatment is carried out — step by step

  1. 1

    Consultation and blood sample

The practitioner assesses what you want to achieve (skin rejuvenation, scar treatment, hair loss) and goes through your medical history. Before an aesthetic injection treatment, a cooling-off period of at least two days applies after you have received the information about the treatment. If the same type of injection treatment is repeated within six months, no new cooling-off period is required. Blood is drawn: 10–60 ml depending on the treatment area.

  2. 2

    Centrifugation

The blood is centrifuged for 8–15 minutes to separate the red blood cells from the plasma and platelets. The concentrated plasma (PRP) or fibrin-rich plasma (PRF) is drawn up into a syringe. PRF requires longer centrifugation but gives a longer release of growth factors.

  3. 3

    Skin preparation

Numbing cream is applied to the treatment area 20–30 minutes beforehand. The skin is cleansed and disinfected. In combination treatment with microneedling, the area is shaved if necessary.

  4. 4

    The treatment

PRP is applied in two ways: 1) Injection with a fine needle at specific points (face, scalp, under the eyes), or 2) Topical application during microneedling — the plasma then penetrates into the skin via microchannels. Both can be combined in the same session.

  5. 5

    Treatment series and maintenance

For skin rejuvenation: 3 treatments 4–6 weeks apart. For hair loss: 4–6 treatments, one every month, then maintenance every 4–6 months. For acne scars: 3–4 treatments 6 weeks apart.

Recovery and aftercare

PRP involves minimal recovery because the plasma comes from your own body — no risk of allergy or rejection. Mild redness and swelling for 24–48 hours is normal. When combined with microneedling, recovery is the same as for microneedling (1–3 days).

  • Avoid washing the treatment area for 4–6 hours after the treatment — let the plasma absorb.
  • No make-up for 12–24 hours.
  • Use SPF 50+ daily for at least 1 week.
  • Avoid active ingredients (retinol, AHA, BHA, high-concentration vitamin C) for 5 days.
  • Avoid intense exercise, saunas, swimming pools and hot baths for the first 48 hours.
  • For scalp treatment: do not wash your hair for the first 24 hours and avoid styling products containing alcohol.
  • Drink plenty of water and eat a protein-rich diet — supports the body's healing process.
  • Avoid blood-thinning medicines (NSAIDs, vitamin E) for a few days before and after — they can reduce the effect.

Who is not suited to PRP?

The treatment is not suitable in the following situations. Always mention these during the consultation.

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Blood disorders: thrombocytopenia, coagulation disorders, anaemia.
  • Ongoing blood-thinning treatment (Waran, Eliquis, Pradaxa) — contact a physician.
  • Active infection in the treatment area (bacterial, viral, fungal).
  • Active cancer or ongoing chemotherapy.
  • Autoimmune diseases in an active phase.
  • Ongoing antibiotic treatment — wait until it has been completed.
  • Use of high doses of cortisone in the past 2 weeks — affects growth factors.
  • Weakened immune system or HIV/hepatitis infection.
  • Recent tattoos in the treatment area (less than 6 months old).

Differences between brands

Several different products are used in Sweden. The differences are often small — which brand suits you is decided by your practitioner based on your goals and previous treatments.

Classic PRP (1 spin)

Standard protocol: the blood is centrifuged once to separate the plasma from the red blood cells. Contains 2–5 times more platelets than normal blood. Cost-effective.

Double-spin PRP

Two centrifugations give a higher concentration of platelets (5–9 times the normal level). Stronger effect but more time-consuming.

PRF (Platelet-Rich Fibrin)

Slower centrifugation without added anticoagulants. Creates a fibrin matrix that releases growth factors slowly over 7–10 days — longer action than PRP.

A-PRF / i-PRF (advanced PRF)

A further development of PRF in liquid form (i-PRF) that can be injected or mixed with fillers. Also contains white blood cells and stem cells from the bone marrow.

PRP-microneedling combination

Combines microneedling with topically applied PRP — often called the "Vampire Facial". Microchannels in the skin allow the plasma to be absorbed more deeply. Popular for acne scars and skin rejuvenation.

When will you see the results?

  1. Immediately afterMild redness and possible swelling. With scalp treatment, it may feel tender for 24 hours.
  2. Week 1–2Redness disappears. The skin gradually feels fresher and more hydrated.
  3. Week 4–6Time for the next treatment in the series. Visible changes in skin quality begin to show.
  4. Month 3 (after a series)Noticeable improvement in radiance, fine lines, scars and pore size. With hair treatment: reduced hair loss, possibly new hairs.
  5. Months 6–12Stable result. Maintenance treatment 1–2 times a year is recommended. Hair results require more frequent maintenance (every 4–6 months).
