How does treatment with HydraFacial work?

HydraFacial is a patented medical skin treatment that combines deep cleansing, chemical exfoliation, extraction and hydration in the same session. The machine uses a vortex tip that suctions away impurities while delivering active serums with hyaluronic acid, antioxidants and peptides. The treatment is one of the few advanced skin treatments with no recovery time — you leave straight away with a visible "glow" effect, which has made it popular as an "event treatment" before weddings, parties or photo shoots. HydraFacial suits most skin types and is often the starting point for more advanced skincare.

How the treatment is carried out — step by step

  1. 1

    Skin analysis and preparation

The practitioner assesses your skin type and any concerns (acne, pigmentation, dryness, radiance). Based on this, the serums and boosters to be included are chosen. Make-up is removed and the skin is prepared.

  2. 2

Step 1 — Cleanse + Peel (cleansing and exfoliation)

The vortex tip cleanses deeply and removes the dead skin layer with a mild glycolic acid/lactic acid solution. This opens up the pores for the next step without irritating the skin.

  3. 3

Step 2 — Extract + Hydrate (extraction and hydration)

The patented vacuum technology draws blackheads and impurities out of the pores without painful manual extraction. At the same time, hydrating serums with hyaluronic acid are delivered directly into the skin.

  4. 4

Step 3 — Fuse + Protect (protection and boosters)

Antioxidants, peptides and any targeted boosters (for pigmentation, acne, ageing or sensitive skin) are applied. Sun protection completes the treatment.

  5. 5

    Maintenance schedule

For visible and lasting results, monthly maintenance is recommended. The effect of a single treatment lasts 4–6 weeks — after that, new skin cells begin to need deep cleansing again.

Recovery and aftercare

HydraFacial has no recovery time. The skin looks fresh immediately after the treatment and you can wear make-up the same day. This is one of the few advanced skin treatments suitable before an event with no risk of redness or peeling.

  • No specific downtime — you can wear make-up and return to your everyday life straight away.
  • Use SPF 30+ daily — exfoliation makes the skin somewhat more sensitive to light for the first day.
  • Avoid active ingredients (retinol, AHA, BHA, high-concentration vitamin C) for the first 48 hours.
  • Avoid saunas, intense exercise and hot baths for the first 24 hours — reduces the risk of irritation.
  • Drink plenty of water — enhances the hydrating effect.
  • Avoid manual blackhead extraction or other scrubs for 1 week.
  • Book your next treatment within 4–6 weeks for the best cumulative effect.
  • In case of unusual redness or rash — contact the clinic.

Who is not suited to HydraFacial?

The treatment is not suitable in the following situations. Always mention these during the consultation.

  • An active acne breakout with inflammation or cysts — wait until the skin has calmed down.
  • Active herpes infection in the treatment area.
  • Active sunburn or skin covered in self-tan.
  • Ongoing isotretinoin treatment (Roaccutan) or treatment stopped within the last 6 months.
  • Eczema, psoriasis or rosacea in an active flare.
  • Ongoing allergic reactions on the face.
  • Chemical peel, microneedling or laser in the same area within 2 weeks.
  • Recent filler or botox in the face — wait at least 1 week.
  • Pregnancy — generally safe, but discuss the ingredients with the practitioner.

Differences between brands

Several different products are used in Sweden. The differences are often small — which brand suits you is decided by your practitioner based on your goals and previous treatments.

HydraFacial® MD (the original)

The patented original machine from the American company HydraFacial LLC. Available in several levels: Signature (classic, 30 min), Deluxe (with booster and LED light), Platinum (with lymphatic drainage). The most proven on the market.

HydraFacial Syndeo

The latest machine generation, with upgraded technology and new boosters for specific skin concerns (Britenol for pigment, ReGen GF for anti-ageing, Aquaguard for sensitive skin).

JetPeel

An Israeli competitor that uses high-pressure oxygen and saline solution instead of a vortex. Similar results — a slightly more "refreshing" feel, but not exactly the same vacuum extraction.

OxyGeneo

Combines exfoliation with oxygenation of the skin via carbon dioxide bubbles. Gives a visible "glow" effect similar to HydraFacial, but with a different technology.

AquaPure / Geneo+ (copies)

Cheaper copycat machines on the market. The results may be similar, but quality varies — always ask the clinic which machine is used.

When will you see the results?

  1. Immediately afterVisible "glow" effect — the skin looks cleaner, fresher and more hydrated. No redness or peeling.
  2. Day 1–7The skin feels smoother and the pores look smaller. Make-up goes on more evenly.
  3. Week 2–4The effect persists. Some notice reduced acne or lighter pigmentation spots.
  4. Week 4–6The effect starts to wear off. Time for the next treatment to maintain the result.
  5. After 3–6 monthly treatmentsCumulative improvement in skin quality, fine lines, pore size and pigmentation — boosters are adjusted to your goals over time.

Frequently asked questions about HydraFacial

How often should you have a HydraFacial?
For the best results, monthly maintenance is recommended. The effect of a single treatment lasts about 4–6 weeks — after that, new skin cells begin to need deep cleansing again. For specific skin concerns (acne, pigmentation), a more intensive series of 4–6 treatments at shorter intervals may be suggested, followed by monthly maintenance.
Is HydraFacial good for acne?
Yes, HydraFacial can help with mild to moderate acne by deep-cleansing the pores and removing blackheads without painful manual extraction. Specific boosters for acne can be added. If you have active inflammatory acne with cysts, you should wait until the skin has calmed down — HydraFacial is then suitable as follow-up maintenance.
How long do the results of a HydraFacial last?
The visible "glow" effect usually lasts 4–6 weeks. With monthly maintenance, the effect builds up — after 3–6 treatments, most people notice a clear improvement in skin texture, pore size, radiance and fine lines.
What is the difference between HydraFacial and a regular facial?
HydraFacial uses patented vortex technology that combines exfoliation, vacuum extraction and the simultaneous delivery of active serums — all in the same step. A classic facial is done manually and often includes painful blackhead extraction. HydraFacial is gentler and gives more measurable results.
Can I have a HydraFacial before a wedding or an event?
Yes — it is one of the few advanced skin treatments with no recovery time. Book 3–5 days before the event for the best "glow". Avoid trying HydraFacial for the first time on the same day as the event, in case the skin reacts unexpectedly.
Who should NOT have a HydraFacial?
People with an active acne breakout, active herpes in the treatment area, eczema or rosacea in a flare-up, or ongoing isotretinoin treatment should wait. Always discuss pregnancy with the practitioner — some boosters are then avoided.
